The U.S. Army had never accepted black soldiers, but the U.S. Navy has. African Americans served as shipboard firemen, stewards, coal heavers, and even boat pilots. The Union refused to use African Americans as soldiers in war, partly due to racism. Many white people believed that black people weren't as skilled or brave as themselves. The logic led the white soldiers that the African Americans belonged doing other work like carpentry or cooking.
